Causes

Tooth decay is the leading cause of cavities. It is a process that can occur with time. Following are the causes of tooth decay.

Plaque Forms

Dental plaque refers to a clear sticky film that covers your teeth. It appears due to not cleaning your teeth properly and eating a maximum amount of starches and sugar. Bacteria quickly start feeding on the sugary substances and start forming plaques.

Plaque Attacks

The acid present in plaque starts removing essential minerals in the outer enamel of your teeth. Erosion leads to tiny holes and openings in the area of enamel. You can call it the first stage of development of cavities. The bacteria and acid can make the next layer of teeth called dentin.

This layer is not hard and is less resistant to acid. Dentins contain tiny tubes that communicate directly with the nerves of certain teeth that are causing sensitivity.

Destruction Continues

Bacteria and acid continue to develop in the area of your teeth. The pulp can become irritated and swollen from the presence of bacteria. Nerves present in the area of your teeth can swallow and cause pain. It can also lead to discomfort.

Risk Factors

Everyone with teeth contains a risk of getting cavities. Following are certain factors that can enhance the risk of getting cavities.

Tooth Location

Commonly, decay occurs in the area of your back teeth. These are molars and premolar’s teeth. These teeth contain many grooves, crannies, and pits. There are multiple roots of teeth present in this area.

That’s the reason this area can collect so many food particles. As a result, it is tough to keep these areas clean and smoother.

Certain Drinks And Foods

Some foods that start clinging to your teeth for a longer duration of time, like honey, milk, and ice cream, can cause decay as compared to foods that can be washed easily with the help of saliva. These foods also include soda, cake, cookies, nuts, hard candy, and dried fruits.

Frequent Sipping And Snacking

When you sip or snack on the sugary drinks frequently, you give more fuel to the bacteria present in the area of your mouth. It produces acids that work to attack your teeth areas and make them down. Sipping soda can create continual acid in your teeth.

Bedtime Infant Feeding

When you give juice, milk, formula, and certain other sugar-containing liquids to babies at bedtime, these beverages can remain in the teeth for a longer time and cause bacteria that lead to tooth decay.

This damage refers to baby bottle tooth decay. Similar damage can appear in toddlers when they wander around and take such beverages.
